YES!!!!!!!! IT'S NOT MY IMAGINATION, THEY DO BITE. I have tried the vinegar cider for over a week now ( does not work). I used to keep bananas out, and that's what started it, but i have not had any fruit out for weeks. I won't do the "bomb thing" it affects my kids asthma.
Somebody out there has got to know something, PLEASE!

If you have an all out infestation the quickest thing to do would be to use a bug bomb the house. Then you will have to make sure there is no food in your house make sure you take the garbage out constantly.

You can also get rid of gnats by using products found around the home. Since they are attracted to the scent of vinegar, fill a jar with vinegar and poke holes in the lid. The gnats will climb into the jar, but they won't be able to climb out. For those that remain in the house, try putting vegetable oil around your kitchen sink drain. Gnats finding themselves coated in the oil will be unable to breed. If you're not interested in potentially clogging your drain with vegetable oil, pouring a cup of ammonia down your kitchen sink is said to get rid of any flies hovering around that area. Let it sit for a couple of hours before using the sink again.

The vinegar, Deet, flea spray will control them. If you have house plants or do repotting in the kitchen, you are inadvertantly introducing them to the house. They (whatever kind of critter they are) come in with the bagged potting soil, probably find peat an ideal home. They will also come in with and gather around fresh fruit.
I know potting soil can be sterilized in the oven, but don't know the specifics. Good luck!

On a light hearted note GNATS are a manifestion of GODS sense of humor.

On a more realistic note GNATS do not bite. They must be some other insect.

Similar in size to "NoSEEums" but not at all alike in any feeding, they can be repelled by any DEET ingredient.

this seems to be gnat season...everyone i know (including myself) has them....and i dont even have fruit in my home.

so here is what i use.... a small container (smallest thing u can find and fill it with apple cider vinegar. these gnats are drawn to it and drown.

the only catch is you need to put in fresh every day...and of course the smell.

good luck :)
