Rattle snakes are pit vipers. The "pits" are two holes on the snake's face that detect heat. This helps them locate prey like mice and gophers.
There are many species of rattlesnakes in the US. The bite of a rattlesnake usually doesn't kill, even without treatment, but makes you very sick and is very painful. Antivenin treatment makes it less severe.
Like all snakes, they eat their prey whole; they cannot tear off pieces. Therefore they never bite anything too large to swallow whole, unless they are frightened or hurt. Usually they will try to get away rather than bite. People get bitten most often when they don't see the snake and they step on it or otherwise hurt or frighten it.
A rattlesnake can control the amount of venom it injects. Sometimes it doesn't inject any, sometimes from only one fang, and sometimes from both. They usually don't inject all their venom, because they want to save some for eating. They need the venom to digest their prey. Babies don't know how to do this, so they just inject all their venom.
King snakes are immune to rattlesnake venom, and they eat rattlesnakes.
Rattlesnakes don't lay eggs. The eggs are kept inside the female's body until they hatch and are born.
In the early days of the USA, the rattlesnake was used by some people as a symbol of the USA, with the slogan "Don't tread on me." This is because the rattlesnake has no desire to harm people, but if you step on it, it will bite. Similarly the American people didn't want to harm another country, but would defend themselves if attacked.
