I asked for ages because, as I'm sure most of you know, "guys" specifically and exclusively meant "males". I'm 42 and it seems to have changed over the course of my life. It still sounds a bit odd when I hear females called "guys", especially if they are older than me, but it seems to be changing that way.
For those who ask why would it be irritating-- picture someone calling a group of girls "you boys". That's sort of what we had to get use to.

The answer to your question is no. I realize that it is an easy way of including everyone in the group.
As to the other...I agree with Shortstuff. Trust me when I tell you that we actually qualify to be in this section!

If anyone is asking ME if I am hungry -the first thing I think is that I am not in my house!
I am not keen on the expression - but that is because I am a grumpy 50 year old English 'lady'. However - I do welcome for the most the relaxing of social 'cloning' - and free expression is what our society is supposed to be all about.
I think that there are a lot worse things that we could be called!

I doesn't bother me at all. I use it myself, as a "catchall" word to describe a group of people.
Since you asked, I'm 58....and I'm rather surprised that most of the answerers here are much younger than me, and do seem a bit young to be answering questions in the Senior Citizens section.

I'm 57, and I HATE it when I'm referred to as a "guy". With these boobs on my chest, how can anyone make the mistake that I look like a guy? Any server who calls me a "guy" starts their tip off automatically at 15% instead of 20%. Poor service makes it go down even further. It's a matter of respect. I feel at 57, i've had enough life experiences; birth, death, tragedy, that I should start getting some respect for my gray hair. I've earned every one of them.

No 58 just an expression including a group nof people. It would sound silly to say " are you females and male hungry"

What do you guys think of this question? I think calling a group of people by one gender is fine. I'm 60 so it's been normal to do that most of my life... until the 80's it wasn't that big of a deal and no one gave it a second thought.
However, when my son calls the house and says, "Hi guys, it's ____, call back when you can." I does bother me. I would like my son to call me mom. Since my husband isn't his father, he could say, "Hi mom and loving step-father..." LOL
I think it bugs me most, the "guys" thing, when I am reading something and they print it his/her or she/he. Maybe we need another word to use like "Hi, folks"!

This is a local thing. Different areas of the country say different things. It's used when refering to a group. In the northeast it's "ya's" or "yooze" in the south it's "ya'll" in the midwest it's "guys" or sometimes "y'uns". I don't find it to be a big deal.

No, it is not meant in a derogatory way. I am from "up north" and that's the northern way of saying "You All". I think "you guys" is better than "yous".....
But now I will think before I say it in case I might insult someone (bec. I am in FL now which is a southern state). We mostly say it in our family though.....but I don't think most people even realize they say it. It's just habit.
I am 39

Not really. Like if someone as a mixed assortment of females and males as friends, he'll often say guys. It doesn't necessarily mean just males. In science and evolution, they refer to us as mankind. I usually say the humankind.

I am 50 and will be 51 very soon. No it does not bother me in the least bit at all. It is more or less a nick name. It's like saying "come on y'all".
