Anyone who buys a Land Rover severely needs their heads examined. This has to be the most awful-looking vehicle ever constructed....

The Land Rover Range Rover gets 19 miles per gallon, only slightly less that the average 23 miles per gallon of your common car. It is not that bad.
And besides, there are so many hippies driving priuses right now, they more than make up for the Land Rover drivers. It all kinda equals out :)

A modern LandRover can do a lot better - the current Defender 90SW is rated at 28.3mpg on the EU combined cycle, while the Freelander2 TD4 manual is rated at 37.7mpg.
If it is carrying 5 people, than means the consumption per person of a Freelander is better than a standard smart fortwo can achieve (as the smart can only carry two people, so would need to achieve 94mpg to match the Freelander).
Which is the greater environmental crime?

Thinking of a true Lanny, not a north face of tescos carpark model, you would be hard pressed to tow a trailer full of livestock with a Smart car. Horses for courses.

Have you tried driving over a field in a Smart Car? It would get lost in a dip, or roll over on a steep incline!

Your point being...?
What good does oil do just lying around underground anyway?...source P.J. O'Rourke.
By the way, you'd have to be driving a Landie REALLY HARD to only be getting 9mpg!
