A plunger or "plumbers helper" will usually fix the problem. If not you will need a "snake", also called a closet auger!

First try a toilet snake - this will clear anything that is in the toilet itself and the first 2 feet or so of plumming. If that does not work out, pull the toilet and rent a good quality power auger for the pipes. After you get it cleared, buy some Zep Drain Care from Home Depot. Mix about 1/2 of the brown powdery substance (it is full of bacteria and enzymes) into a gallon or so of warm water. Pour that down your drain and let it set for at least 6 hours.

A closet auger is the only way to clean a blocked toilet without removing the toilet. It has a housing with a 90 degree bend to get you past that first corner in the toilet. If a closet auger doesn't clear the toilet, you'll have to remove the toilet to see if the blockage is near the base where there is only a narrow opening to the sewer line. A pencil (or soaked tampon) will cause a slow drain because it can't flex to get past the last corner. If that auger or removal doesn't work, the problem will most likely be downstream before your main sewer hookup or septic tank.

I have used a acid called drain master - WONDERFULL stuff and cheap. It burnes off anything. I paid R20 something in South-Africa.
