Apples(Macs) cost a considerable amount more than the other brands you listed, although I am a big believer in the "you get what you pay for" saying. My brother got a Toshiba laptop for $480 and it was awful, it couldn't even run 2 web pages. Also most new laptops, with exception of Apple computers come with Windows Vista, which is a resource hog, you will want to have at least 2 gigs of RAM. Don't cop out on a laptop, you'll probably be using it for the next couple of years, you don't want to be stuck with a junker for that long, do you?

HP and Dell have low price models.
They really don't have enough RAM (without an upgrade) to run Vista, so take the XP option if it is available.
You best choice may be to buy an off lease corporate model. They start around $400, some even less.

Yeah, there are plenty of sub $700 computers, Both HP and Dell have them and any bestbuy or comp usa should have them to. Macs are over $1000 so you wont be getting one of them

I LOVE MY DELL! GO TO DELL.COM AND IF THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY NEW ONES FOR THAT BUDGET THEY ALWAYS HAVE AUCTIONS ON REFURBISHED MODELS. THEY SELL FOR CHEAPER THEN BRAND NEW PLUS THEY COME WITH A DELL WARRANTY! I KNOW A FEW PEOPLE WHO HAVE GOTTEN THEIR COMPUTERS THIS WAY AND HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THEM.
