Had our central AC serviced, and three days later AC wasn't working. Company came back and said there's a pinhole leak in the evaporator coil and it would have to be replaced. This seems like a strange coincidence. The guy claims he doesn't clean the evaporator coil during standard service. Does this seem right? Is it likely they could have done this damage?

Yes, sometimes they clean the evaps coils depending on location and service agreement.. I would get second opinion if you do not trust the first. That may not even be the real problem.

There's no such thing as a perfect air filter. Very tiny dust particles will pass through any filter. An annual cleaning will prevent a major build up. It was probably dirty when you moved in. It can't get clogged up in 7 months unless the coil is located where a lot of dirt can get to it. A dirty coil can cause head pressures to build up and eventually damage the compressor.

They shouldn't have done anything to the evaporator coil. I don't believe the pinhole nonsense. They could have done something else. You don't need them to do the routine maintenance. You can do it yourself. Also, you can find out what is wrong with it using the air conditioner page at my source.

Hello,

For the best performance AC should be serviced routinely and also timely AC servicing can keep repair cost low. But evaporator has nothing to do with it. It is completely out of it. It is peculiar problem they have created, are there any other problems. I think you should consult with some experts. I can suggest you that.here is the source

you say it was serviced. does that mean a problem that needed serviced or just a cleaning and routine maintainance.

some do clean the coil when cleaning. can something happen that he didnt notice or doesnt fess up to? sure. would you have a case to go back on the company? unfortunately not.

things do happen though. i just had a compresser fail when i was standing over it. i felt bad , i didnt do anything wrong, but it just went when i was there.
