Consider number line and start at zero.
Move 12 LEFT and then 12 LEFT.

It may sound stupid but hear me out. I used to have a big problem with adding and subtracting negatives.. until i used a bath tub.
you start with -12
imagine this is your bathwater (i know, but bare with me)
You than add -12 , imagine you are adding more cold water to your bath. The bath gets colder, so you know your number must decrease.
In this case the answer is -24.
A bit long winded but hey, it helped me.

the first -12 represents you owing someone 12 dollars. Then you add more debt by borrowing another 12 dollars (the 2nd -12). How much money do you owe?
If you owe money the answer is negative. If you don't owe any money then the answer is positive.
