A hurricane is a heat engine. The strength of the storm is a factor of it's size and pressure. The lower the pressure, the faster the winds will be due to the high pressure rushing in to fill the void. It is kind of like the pressure differential is the horsepower of the engine.

The winds spin counter clockwise here in the northern hemisphere due to the coriolis effect (just like water down a drain), and in lower pressure hurricanes a very distinctive eye wall forms. Storm surge is a result of a bow wave in the front of the storm, suction from the low pressure (which can raise the sea level up to 1m by itself) and wind driving the water on shore on the bad side of the storm.

Some of the worst hurricanes have been:

Wilma- 882 mb
Mitch- 888 mb
Rita- 896 mb
Katrina- 902 mb
Camille- 909 mb
Andrew- 922 mb

It is amazing that 3 of the most intense storms ever to form, did so in the Summer of 2005.
