I'm just wondering, is it a bad idea to apply for social security if you really don't need it? I'm disabled but I'm able to do things for myself(feed myself, bathe myself, etc.) However, I don't have a whole lot of money and I want to change my living situation...would this be a bad idea?

You are the reason that Social Security exists.

You are eligible for disability benefits if you cannot work. Lots of people on disability can perform basic personal hygiene. It may take a long time for your case to be reviewed and it may require a number of doctor appointments to make the case.

It seems like you are asking if it is a bad move morally to get the benefits when you are not the most urgent case out there. Everyone's case is determined on their individual merits. Other people won't miss out on benefits because you are accessing them. If you appeal your case through all levels of appeal, honestly believing that you are not significantly disabled, then you might want to consider not tying up the appeals process. But that shouldn't stop you from applying.

If you are entitled to Social Security disability income, apply for it. I am getting regular Social Security income and can live with out it. I feel I earned it.

If you are disabled, you are entitled to receive money from the government. It's money that the government gives you to help you out even if you don't need it. If I were you, I would apply. The money is better off given to people who are disabled rather than people who are not.
