on my calculator when i try 3(-5)² i get 75.. when i try 3×-5² i get -75, this is really confusing me!! whats the difference?? arent they supposed to mean the same thing? when i square a negative integer will it be negative or postive??

The order of the operations you perform make a difference. If you square a negative number, you get a positive. But if you first square a positive number, then apply a negative, you get a negative number. Remember that when you multiply something by a negative number, your product will have the opposite sign of the first number. So (-5)^2 = -5 times -5 = -(-25) = 25.

The differnce are the brackets.
With the brackets, you are squaring (-5) so that means -5 * -5 = 25. So with the brackets 3 * 25 = 75 (positive number)
Without the brackets, you interpret it as -1 * 5^2 = -1 * 5 * 5 = -25. So without the brackets you get 3 * -25 = -75.

The difference between a 2.2 L and 3.5 L. The L stands for liters and without getting into a long winded scientific explanation it is simply a measurement of the size of an engine. A 2.2 L is the smaller of the two engines and this is the staple small engine of the GM brand of cars. It has been around a long time and is a 4 cylinder. This engine is shared among all of GM's small cars. The 3.5 Liter is the larger of the two and is a V6 Engine. I believe the cobalt is a better looking car but these cars are very similar and the malibu was the worse of the two prior to the car being totally redesigned here recently. I do however recommend staying away from the 3.5 L engine. very problem prone.

We have (-5)^2 = 25 whereas -5^2 = - 25. This is because, in the "standard" order of operation, we must do the exponentiation before the negation. Exponentiation is said to have higher priority than negation. However, if there are parenthesis, we always compute within the parenthesis first. Some programs, notably Microsoft Office Excel and the programming language bc, give unary operators (e.g. negation) a higher priority than binary operators (e.g exponentiation). So, in Excel, -5^2 = 25, because we do the minus first, which is not the "standard" rule !

3 multiplied by (negative 5 squared) will get you 75.
3 multiplied by negative (5 squared) will get you -75.
The difference is if you want the (5^2) to be negative, or if you want (-5) squared.
If you square a negative number, the result will be a positive number. If you square a positive number, the result will also be positive.

K N 123 is right; in the first case you're squaring the number between the bracket (-5), and any real number powered to a pair potence is positive.
In the second case, you're squaring only the number five, and the minus sign is unaffected.

3(-5)² = 3 * 25 = 75
3×-5² is understood as : 3×-(5)² = 3 * - (25) = - 75.

The 3 is irrelevant.
(-5)²=(-5)*(-5)=25.
-5²=-1*(5²)=-1*5*5=-1*25=-25

This machine obviously has a bug in it that was not caught when designed due to an 'Engineering Oversight'.
This kinda like writing a program in basic, with out error traps.
Taking the square root of any negative number will cause the computer to crash!
OR
Your instruction manual my instruct you to follow a higharchy of commands to prevent this.
Example: 3+7*5=38, NOT 50 !!!!
Test my HIGHARCHY suggestion and you shouldn`t have this problem. (That`s a hassle) I suggest you buy a Calc. that is more 'friendly'!

because (-5)power of 2 is -5 times -5. 5 to the 2nd power is five times 5. you could just add the opposite in which case all of the - signs turn into plus signs but you have to do all of them that includes negatives and minus signs
