It"s pretty standard on american cars of 6 or 8 cylinders that 4 quarts of oil are used in the oil pan and at oil change with a filter change you add one quart for the filter for a total of 5 quarts

depending on how well it was taken care of it could use 1 for every tank full of fuel.
