Men like to own things. When they own a car, they automatically think female because that is the one thing in life they would like to have possession of.

The metaphor of a car as a "she" hails from the same ancient metaphor of a ship as a "she". Ships are containers that carry cargo and deliver that cargo. Cars are containers that carry passengers and deliver passengers. Woman have been thought of in many cultures as containers that carry unborn children and deliver them. The metaphor "she" refers to "containers" carrying and delivering something. Things that contain, carry and deliver "goods" are frequently called "she" in most cultures.

This probably originated from the ancient practice of calling ships by feminine pronouns. People simply extended it to cars. You'd think it would make a lot more sense just to say 'it', wouldn't you?

I think it's a holdover from the practice of referring to ships in that manner. I've never understood this except perhaps it's because "she" sounds nicer than "it".

If a guy is in love with his car, would he naturally say he or she? It's like personifying a car, if it were alive, they would be in love with a gender that they are attracted to obviously.

because men are more inclined to say they love thier cars and they of course don't want it to have a guy's name.
Women could give thier cars a girls' name because they feel a close friendship with them and usually personalize them in a feminen way.

Because it seems like cars are as fickle as the female population. They work when they want to, the run when they want to, and it makes good sense to a guy to call his car "she" "her" and such, so he can baby it. That's just my guess.
