1) 2y = 2 { Add 1 to both sides }
y = 1 { Divide both sides by 2 }

2) z > 3 { Multiply both sides by 3 }

3) a ≠ 5 { Add 2 to both sides }

4) x/4 < 3 { Subtract 2 from both sides }
x < 12 { Multiply both sides by 4 }

I take it that you have no idea what algebra is all about, so here goes. think of each equal or inequality sign as the midpoint of a 2 pan balance scale. If you add the same amount to both sides or subtract the same amount from both sides or multiply or divide both sides by the same number , What happens to the balance? Of course you can see that it stays in balance. Well we will use that fact first to solve the equation 2y-1=1. To get all variables (the letter terms, in this cas y) on one side and all numbers on the other FIRST add something that will get rid of them on the unwanted side thus add 1 and we get 2y-1+1= 1+1 or 2y=2. Now if we divide the 2y by 2 we get y and 2divided by 2 =1 thus
2y=2 becomes y=1 YOUR ANSWER. Wasn't that simple?

You can do the same thing with inequalities as long as you remember that when multiplying or dividing by a negative number the inequality changes. for example 3 > 1 but dividing by -1 we get -3 ? -1 which we know is -3< -1 WALLA the inequality changed!!!!!

z/3>1 multiply both sides by 3 and we get z>3. You can see that if z=3 hen we get 1>1 which is incorrect, but increas z by anything (thus z>3) and we get a number that is greater than 1.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a+2 not= 7 well just subtract 2 from each side and you get

a not = 5. You can see that if a =5 then a+2 =7 so a not = 5
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
x/4 +2 < 5

subtract 2 from each side and get

x/4 < 3

now multiply both sides by 4 to get

x < 12

I hope that this answer helps you see that algebra is fun and easy as soon as you compare it to the balance scale method.

1. 2y - 1 = 1
2y = 2
y = 1

2. z/3 > 1
z>3

3. a + 2 not equal 7
a is not 5

4. x/4 + 2 < 5
x/4 < 3
x < 12

2y - 1 = 1
2y = 2
y = 1

z/3 > 1 means z must be greater than three

a+2 not equal to 7 means a cannot equal 5

x/4 + 2 < 5
x/4 < -3
x < -3/4
