Neglect has many degrees. The Mcans did what many parent may do at times and were very unlucky. Call it neglect if you want but not a serious neglect of parental duties.

We all know they neglected their children by leaving them asleep in a foreign place, not their own safe bedroom at home, while they enjoyed themselves 75, 100 yards or whatever away. That is fact. But in my book, all the time they were in Portugal before returning to UK last week, they were still neglectful - this time of the twins. For 100 days or so, those twins were not having a normal life, they were still left in a creche while their parents did the media round of interviews, dashing off to see the Pope, Gerry going to USA, jogging etc. They should have come straight back to UK and resumed normal lives for the twins' sake, and handled the campaign as it became from UK. We all know that with the Internet, the world is a small place, there's no need to actually visit everywhere in person.

guilty of neglect yes you can not disbute the facts they left 3 children alone to go to dinner and most people do not have gardens that long or that are behind a wall and accross a road. They could of used a listening monitor or the listening service they chose not to but guilty of anything else then I'll wait for some hard facts. For those of you who have read my posts my son who dissapeard at the zoo luckly was found yes I feel incredible guilt and if social services had of been called I would of admitted yes I took my eye off him I was wrong.

They are definitely guilty of neglect, they have already admitted to leaving the children unattended and I'm sure being doctors they could have afforded a baby sitter for a few hours, and assuming they are innocent of any ill doing then Maddy would still be with them.

I am waiting for the facts. My viewpoint is I have never been for them but wouldn't say they are guilty of neglect. The whole thing could have been an accident, just want the truth but the story is soo big whose to say we will get the truth? What a story though.

I understand wanting to see some facts before we decide that hounding these parents is OK. As a mother I see a huge problem in what the McCain's have done. The following comments should be at least enough to give you a dose of suspicion. It is enough to get my yes they are guilty vote.

Why did the McCain's leave Maddy alone if they had nothing to do with it?
If your child had been kidnapped in a foreign country don't you think that you would have hope that she was alive. If you had nothing to do with her disappearance you would still be in denial. You would still be holding out hope that she were coming back to you. That being said, would you go home to your home country effectively leaving her alone in a strange country with strangers that mean her harm or would you be out walking the streets looking in every passing car, every store front ,every shop hoping to catch her in the corner of your eye? I know which one I would be doing. What is wrong with these picture?

No i don't believe they are guilty of neglect,no more than any parent who put the kids to bed then sit out in the garden drinking over the Barbi and goes to check on the kids every 15 Min's they will regret leaving the kids and they wont ever forgive themselves hindsight is a wonderful thing they were very unlucky

They are definitely guilty of neglect. But waiting on the facts for anything else. Innocent until proven guilty after all.

*Pen, if this was the same as popping out in to the garden for the barbeque your garden must be huge - does it also have an open area of deep water straight outside of it?

Would you consider going out to the pub though - could be 5 miles away, it doesnt matter, you're allowed to pop back intermittently to check in on them?

Or is that different?

I give up on this country's lax attitude to child care - it really is a digrace.

I think that they're guilty of neglect but in a country where listening services are readily avail. at hotels I'm not sure if the same standards for neglect would apply.
