Well, you know I spent quite a few minutes thinking about this, and I am quite sure that AS A FAMILY we NEVER went to a restaurant, when I was a kid!
The closest thing that I can get is the corner diner where I used to go for french fries on a Saturday, if I had earned enough money to afford it. Once in a blue moon, I would also buy myself a foot long hot dog.
The first "real" restaurant I ever entered were the ones I went to with friends when I was already in college. Then my favourtie was a pizzeria run by Greeks....the very best pizza I have ever eaten! (Even up til now.). We used to go out in a group of six, and order an extra large fully dressed pizza (without the anchovies--which we all agreed we hated after the first time). The pizza was at least 3 feet across (so large it hung over both sides of the booth table), and you really did need both hands to hold one slice of it to your mouth. The cost?--$6, for the pizza. Pizza drinks and dessert would set us back $2 each.

We went to lots of restaurants when I was a child. My mom
got tired of cooking, so we'd go out. I don't remember having
a favorite, but I liked the bread sticks at one Italian place
in New York. We usually went to German places or French
or one of the many ethnic restaurants in and around New
York. We would sometimes go to Trader Vic's or some
Chinese place.

I lived in San Francisco, so had many to choose from
But my Mom used to take us to about three:
Dick's, it was a good old American type diner, with huge portions, down on Mission St.
Z's- it was buffet style and they were know for their Apple Pie.
She would tell us not to eat, that we were going to Z's.
Or we would go to one of the many Family Style Italian restaurants, down in North Beach. You know the ones that give you all you can eat. First the Large bowl of Minestrone Soup, then The large bowl of Salad, then an antipasto, then the Main course, then dessert. And course all you could drink soda.

In the 40's there were not many restaurants that my family went to. A few times, I can remember going to China town (in Chicago) and having a great time. There were a few road house steak houses (long gone) which I didn't care for. There was a western suburb (Elmhurst) family restaurant that we discovered in the late 60's named Horwath's which we went to; I went to; my wife and I went to; we took our children to at least once a week. It was torn down 4 years ago, and we miss it and have found nothing to replace it near home..

Hard for me to answer this one as I didn't grow in any one place being a military dependent....we ate in restaurants often while living in Europe and the ones that stick out in my memory were LeSelect in Paris and just about any restaurant in Italy! LOL - particularly Venice!
There was a carry out restaurant outside Boston when we lived there where you could get lobster chunks, corn on the cob etc...can't remember the name.
Different from today's world, carry outs were virtually unknown and eating in, with the family around the table was the IN thing!

We rarely ate out. McDonalds and Krystal were a big deal. We rode past them a thousand times for each one stop. If we traveled to see a relative in a nursing home and had to dine out it was always a family style restaurant owned locally. When burger King opened a neighbor family took us all just to sample the food.

My favorite resturant was the local Dairy Bar. The whole family would get in the car and off we'd go. The carhop would come up and take our order. We'd get burgers, hot dogs, and fat-crinkled ff. She'd bring it to the car and 'hang' the tray on the side of the door. It was all so good and a real treat.
edit: Sorry, we didn't have any buffets in our area.

there was a place we used to go that was about 15 miles away in a town called Kankakee - the name of the restaurant was the Redwood Inn. it was a buffet and they had wonderful food. plus you got a free meal for your birthday, so we were always guaranteed going at least 6 times per year as each of our birthdays came up.
