I think they used her to up their ratings for the VMA's. They knew people would tune in just to see whether or not she was really making a comeback.
Don't tell me MTV didn't know how she would do. They did have rehearsals and shows like that require you to have a detailed description of your performance in order to deal with the technical aspects of it.

I'm really not sure who Kanye West is. I know he's someone in the music industry but I have no idea who he is or what songs are his and I have no idea why people keep mentioning him on here.

Here's the thing. I believe she is mentally ill. There are numerous sources claiming she is bipolar which would make you seem "insane" if left untreated.
If MTV brought a state hospitalized mentally ill person on just to have people laugh at and judge them there would be public outcry. What's the difference? Assuming Britney is mentally ill, could she really have made the best decision for herself?

I believe they were hoping for a freak show and they got it. It was obvious Britney was out of shape and her recent performances at nightclubs were less than spectacular. MTV signed her on anyway and I think it was because they were hoping she would fall flat on her face so they could get more ratings. It worked.

I think people need to start being concerned with their own lives than Britney Spears. If you were getting as much sh!t as she is, you would probably have a mental breakdown. I am not a Britney fan by any means, might I add. I just think that there are more important things in the world to be talking about. I mean, yeah, she may have done a bad job, and right, MTV couldn't have thought that it would do her career well, but after going through what she has gone through, plus having 2 kids, she looked good. Compared to her old self, no, but look at all of the criticism she has gotten. I feel bad for her.

There's a difference between forcing someone to perform when they are unable to, and taking advantage of a situation that will make you money.
If you find $100 on the street, are you going to pick it up? Of course.
If Britney Spears is going to boost MTV's ratings, are they going to sign her on?
Absolutely.
Ultimately, it was her decision as to whether or not she wanted to perform. Her decision was to go through with it. She's a big girl. Even if she's a little insane (ok, maybe not just a little..), she still had managers and other people that could have said No. This is just as much publicity for Britney as it is for MTV. Besides, I'm sure Brit is used to negative publicity by now.
I have no sympathy for the people who have everything handed to them only to screw it all up by acting dumb. Most people have to work their *** off their entire lives to scrape by. It's an insult to the hard-working people when people like Britney do things like this.
Don't put her on a pedestal. She'll just fall off anyway.

Of course MTV and all networks care about ratings but no I don't think they exploited her because she could {and should} have said no. I saw a bit of her rehearsals and it looked better she was dancing more I think she froze when she saw all the celebs and people. And regardless if her rehearsals sucked MTV wanted viewers so they wouldn't care if it was good or not as long as the ratings were high . I was one that tuned in because I wanted to she her perform.^_^ DJ

yes, everyone knew she was going to mess up royally. MTV was just taking advantage of this fact to gain hype. there were so many other performers who deserved to get the opening spot. this VMA was a disaster, britney did horrendous, tommy lee and kid rock got into a fist fight, and according to "inside edition," part of the stage fell during a performance threatning a slew of celebs and fans with the possibility of being electrocuted.

In a way, yes. I think the only reason that they used her as the "opening act" (which is ALWAYS huge for the VMAs) after everything that has been going on with her, is to obtain more ratings.

I think it was meant to be portrayed the way it was. I think media has taken their obsession towards certain people such as Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and a couple others. The thing that angers me is that they intentionally changed her performance last minute and she was unhappy about that, but you didn't see that information in the media. Then her shoe was broken, they didn't announce that in the media, but they did inform everyone that her childrens birthdays this week and K-Fed was at home with them celebrating their birthday. Like Britney just forgot about them. Please. K-Fed is a money hungry loser that is just out to make some easy money from Britney. I hate how the media just leaves certain aspects out just so it sounds good. Britney made her first mistake by marrying K-fed. But, Don't worry next week the media will refocus on Lindsey Lohan.

Okay Kanye West. Nobody forced britney spears to get on stage and make an asshole out of herself. She did it willingly and I think we need to stop feeling sorry for her. Until I have some proof that MTV held a gun to her head and forced her to perform, Im not going to feel bad for her.

I think it was mutual, the were using her as a draw and she was using them to launch "The New Britney". Did they know she would bomb before the show, probably, but it was too late to do anything about it by then.
Rumor is that she tried to put too much flash bang with the magic stuff and when that wouldn't work it all fell apart.
The choice of what to wear and what to sing were hers.
She is not Madonna and never will be.

I don't think they did, but, I think they took advantage of the train wreck they saw coming. She was busy partying with Sean Combs and company, and has no one to blame for the disaster of a performance she gave.
She phoned it in, and now has to pay the bill. She needs to get serious, quit relying on technology, develop her voice, and work for it. Christina has a voice, she's reinvented herself as many times as Madonna, Brit is a one trick pony, and her time is quickly passing her by.
