The band came first. They took their name from Muddy Waters' song "Rollin' Stone". The magazine came later, and I believe it was named after the band.

The band came first. They started in 1963, some four years before the magazine was first published. The group took its name from the 1950 Muddy Waters song "Rollin' Stone". In fact, that's what their name was until their manager made them add the "g" a year later.
