How do I report my local police department for theft?
Some kid came by my house the other day, said that my bike was his bike, so my bike was seized. The kid never provided any form of proof that he ever owned a bike like mine, so the port huron police department didn't let him take my bike, but they won't let me get my bike back because I don't have the receipt of when I bought the bike. How do I report the police department of Port Huron, Michigan for theft and get my bike back?

Why should I have to provide any more evidence that I owned the bicycle than :
1. It was on my property
2. the police had to have me UNLOCK it off of my porch to take it to the station
3. My neighbor gave a statement that she SAW me pay cash for the bike, and she know who I bought it from.

You will need to get a lawyer and probably sue the police for recovery of your bike. It is not their business to make you prove that you purchased it legally. It is their business to prove that it was stolen. If they cannot do that then they have no evidence of a crime and can not hold the bike as evidence.

You will probably have to spend money to get this done unless you can find a lawyer who will do it pro bono. You will probably not be able to make any money off of this, so don't get your hopes up. However, it is possible for a lawyer to get the police to realize their mistake and give you your bike back.

wow - typical police stupidity. I would go down to the station and raise some hell. Pick up something the police have in the office and ask them if they have the receipt for it.

You have to prove it's yours first and I'd ALMOST bet you can't.
