Ive got a nice rose bush in my garden with a trellis (sorry about the spelling) on the wall. The bush just seems to be growing out instead of up, Ive tided some parts of the bush to the wall but nothing is happening! How do I tame it and make it grow upwards?!

When you prune it cut at an angle leaving the last bud on each twig/branch as one point up the trellis (your spelling is fine BTW!)
Roses get bushy if they are pruned regularly - and especially if pruned around this time of year - it tells them to put on a growth spurt.
Depending on when your rose flowers, do a double prune - take the top 4-5 inches off after flowering then (as long as it isn;t an early spring flowerer!) take it back to the further bud in about February.
Once you have it growing up instead of out - there is not REALLY any reason to do more than a trim to keep it in shape and to the right size after that - roses do NOT actually NEED annual pruning!

You have probably got a "rambler" variety rather than a climber (check the label if you still have it). Ramblers are very vigorous and as their name implies - grow like mad and can make for a lovely show of flowers if it's in the right place. you can prune back the unwanted branches and shape it as you wish, keeping a nice framework of healthy branches. Autumn is an ideal time to do this. You can prune again in Spring if necessary.

Did you purchase the rose as a "climbing" rose? Sounds like your rose bush is a spreader and not a climber. They are two different things.

Roses are one of those plants that don't follow trellises. They just follow the way the sun is shining. you are going to have to continue to tie them, or weave them in the trellis.

We use twist-ems to hold the branches were we want them to go. Those little plastic covered wires that are found on bread wrappers. You can buy a roll of them and cut off what you need. That should train them to follow the trellis.

good luck.

Buy a pack of aphids! Very cheap, and they will definitely keep any plant under control.
