In London, it appears that a "Blanket Ban" on reporting has occurred. First, there was a conference, last Sunday, in which Professor Richard Pankhurst spoke. This was followed by a Mayors of London Dinner Reception, with 11 Mayors attending. On Monday, not a mention anywhere. Tuesday night was brilliant, at least 20,000 Abasha attended the Millenium Celebration in Trafalgar Square. Tuesday, not a mention. Last night, the Ethiopian Embassy had a party from 1pm till very late (we left just after 11pm and it was still going). I have not checked the Media today, yet but am not optimistic of any reporting. The ban on reporting is a political one and is too obvious here because our media usually love to print Abasha news. Our News Stations (BBC and ITV) are also usually keen to broadcast such events. I believe the decision was due to a few factors of which the first being that the Ethiopian (Orthodox) Millenium was the true Millenium as the West had changed it's callendar thus gaining seven years. If truth was known, it would embarass all those Governments that had their people celebrating a (false)Millenium seven years ago. They had even got that wrong as there was not a year zero (0) thus the Millenium should have been 2001. The second reason is that Melles's Government had just released a number of opposition party members and had allowed them to travel thus many have arrived in the UK, the US and I believe Italy. Seven of them made a short speech at the Trafalgar Square Celebration. However, I can't see any reason for that event to be censorred in the way it has been. If anything, their arrival and their taking part in the celebrations, as free men, should have been big news. At the end of the day, we'll never know who ordered this media ban but one thing I do know is that many Abasha will point the finger at Melles and they'd be 100% wrong. This order is more than likely to have come from a British Minister on the direction from the US. Once again, what should have been a major World Wide celebration has become a wet disaster possibly so it didn't take the spotlight away from any 9/11 remembrance events. Anyway, as a final comment, the West may have stopped any media attention but they did NOT stop the Abasha from having a great celebration. Happy Millenium to All!
PS - Nessa, don't forget that when 9/11 occurred it was the Ethiopian New Year, on the same day. I actually heard that many Ethiopians were extremely happy about the event and I had even received a SMS with a picture of two towers and a plane in one of them with the message "Happy New Year" underneath. Putting that aside, I have witnessed many Abasha Muslims celebrating the "Ethiopian Millenium" even though it is an Orthodox Millenium. Surely that should have been reported as it shows unity amongst all Abasha, regardless of faith. It shows that Abasha can have peace with each other, regardless of any tribal disputes and/ or faith. Surely, that should have been a very important message to the world? I have also heard that at one event, both a Muslim and an Orthodox priest had said pryers at the same event. Now that should have been world news, Muslims and Christians in worship (peacefully) together.

Because it has no relevance to them. They keep track of their own calendar not everyone elses.
