I was reading about the shooting victims and one requires an electric wheelchair and feeding tube. Why is that okay for them, when everything else in society isn't?

Every group in this country does this. You have all of the Republicans saying we need to do away with big gvernment blah blah blah and what's the first thing they do when there is a tornado or natural disaster in their areas. They say we need the federal govet to delcar this a disaster area and send us money and supplies and help us.

I don't think the Amish are going to let one of their own die because living would require an electric wheelchair and feeding tube. I don't know everyting about the Amish but I do know they're good people, and to assume that they reject us until they want something is off base. I'm sure they must have some religious allowances for special circumstances. Why would you feel so strongly that you'd post a question like this? Did they want you to pay for the wheel chair?

That's actually not true. The Amish, or some sects of them anyway, have been using some modern technological advances for years. There is a small Amish community that lives near my parents who run a lumber mill and they use electricity but only in the mill. In their homes they forbid it. Different groups have different rules, but overall, they're in favor of doing what is necessary to save lives. Can you blame them?

they minimize technology use, but I think they realize if they get to involved with society they might lose members, or be in a position to be taxed. maybe fear of contamination?

I have wondered myself why they feel they are no part of society but at the same time they are dependant on that society for it's very existance. in other countries they would of been killed for not paying taxes , not protected. what is sad too is they are very stand offish, I mean if your religion is so wonderful why dont' you want to share it with others? why not give other people a chance to repent (if in their eyes society is pagan).

I have many times in the past tried to strike up discussions, as well as many of my friends, to talk about the bible, but they don't even try to talk or discuss it, it is sad really. once I walked up with a friend and there are a slew of woman shucking corn. they absolutly wouldn't say a word, even when we said hi.

what kind of religion makes you act rudely to another. why the fear of even talking with someone outside the clan? jesus and the apostles talked to any who would listen and they were very kind and respectful in their manner of doing it.

anyway I feel sorry for them. but they sure have beautiful horses however. and their gardens are beautiful!

I've seen Amish using powered lawn mowers. Seen them using cell phones. Seen them using regular phones. They will drive forklifts in factories. They will use a tractor on the highway. It's simply a weird way of life. And any people that would pull a little red wagon full of kidsdown a busy highway needs to rethink what they are doing.

i believe some of you are confusing mennonites with the amish they are similar in beliefs but the mennonites use modern devices but still tend to shun outsiders i live in an area with both and they are good people who harm no one and only ask to be left alone to live their live as they wish

Why don't you ask them that question? They do believe in doctor's & hopitals, at least in Ohio they did. You seem slighted that they reject our culture but yet have sought medical attention. You shouldn't feel that way. I have met many Amish families & they are very good people.

Why do you care- how does it really effect you?
I hope you really need some wood furniture or an Amish quilt one day and they reject you!

They reject the wickedness of our society, not the technology.
