Interesting that most of the answers I see here talk of Bush pushing this war onto his next "democratic" President. First of all, the democrats have to win the election. With any luck they will, but I'm not holding my breath. Also, the thought of blaming the next President for this war is intriguing to me. Kind of like blaming Nixon for Vietnam. I believe that it was Kennedy (a democrat) who originally got us into Vietnam, and it was Johnson (another democrat) who made the largest troop surge to that country. Now you tell me, who should we blame for that and who should we blame for this? Lets at least be fair and if we're going to blame the man who started the war then it is Kennedy and Bush. But if we're going to blame the men who finished the war, well its Nixon and to be determined. So please if your going to talk about history, get your right. Thanks and have a nice day.
Oh yeah, and officially the Korean War is not over yet, so we have not won or lost that one. Although it is increasingly looking like North Korea wants a peace treaty as they are inviting inspectors in from the UN and the US to monitor the dismantling of their nuclear reactors so a treaty can be written. So perhaps Bush will have a win on his war docket before its all said and done.

No stupid we lost the war of 1812. Or was that a draw also James Madison was president when the British burnt down Washington. We won the Battle of New Orleans after the war was over.

What would we win if we could win in Iraq? We would only win oil which will soon be obsolete. Actually, the war is with Terrorist and not with Iraq. Iraq has just been a vehicle used by someone to bleed US blood and treasury. The link below is the best I have seen as it describes our problem very well. It was not written by a general, but the information is great.

Congress cut off Funding during the Ford Administration, and the incompetent liberals lack the votes to force Bush out of Iraq. Try reading a book once in awhile and report back to us when you get your history correct instead of making it up on the fly.

That's not quite accurate. Richard Milhous Nixon resigned the Presidency in August of 1974. Within two months AFTER that resignation the Congress voted to cut off all funding for the Republic of South Vietnam. Gerald Rudolph Ford was the President when that happened. On April 25th of the following year, the government in Saigon fell to regular forces of North Vietnam.
It is the only war ever fought in the history of the U.S. in which our forces won every battle, but the political leaders decided to throw in the towel.

As long as we elect politicians who think with their privates (aka Clinton and Craig) or stupid (gee, did I leave that tape recorder on Nixon) we will have more of the same. The truth be told, lousy intelligence, world wide, got us into this. The saddest fact.....it will be the next president who will "lose" this war. Also, we tried 15 years of diplomacy with Saddam and it didn't work. To be perverse, "How do you do diplomacy with someone who wants to kill you?" Much to ponder. War will probably end when we destroy ourselves, sorry to say.

A winnable war is one of conquest or defense. The last war which was defense was WWII, and because the last several have been pseudo-conquest, they are difficult to "win".
In todays world of modern diplomacy, no one wins a war, you just end it. Cold war included.

if we pull out it will only be because we choose too. NOT because we were forced too. People say we "lost" the Vietnam war but in reality we won every major battle. If you decide to quit because you no longer think its worth it is not the same as being beaten. If we really wanted to we could destroy every inch of Iraq but that's the problem with America. We can never agree on what we REALLY want to do. Our objectives change according to whatever way the political wind is blowing at the time.

A lot of Germans believed the army was stabbed in the back on the verge of victory by the treaty of Versailles.
We have people now who refuse to admit we were defeated in Vietnam. Also I think we signed a treaty during the War of 1812 that ceded come concessions to Great Britain ...but in both Vietnam and Iraq, America betrayed its self. We don't seem to have learned much from the experience.

Democrats JFK and LBJ left their mess for the next President to clean up:
Republican Richard Nixon.
AND
of course (as they are revisionists when it comes to history)
they blame it on Republicans in general and Nixon in particular.
