I checked my fuel pump there are no leaks around it and I changed the fuel filter because sometimes after I start my car if i go close to the fuel pump/filter area i smell gas but there are no leaks.. Also a few weeks back i jacked up the rear of the car to look under it meaning the front was an inch aways from the ground and slanted and i saw gas leaking from the front of the car close to the fuel pump/filter area is there some sort of valve that releases excess fuel in the filter or pump because after that I couldnt make it leak again to find where it was leaking from..it was only a small leak that lasted a minute or so. I still cant find a leak till today but I do smell the faint smell of gas occasionally

No there is no pressure valve. The only place to get a leak will be the line to the carbirator or the carbirator it self.Did you check that?
If you are getting gas leaking out of the fuel pump vent holes then you need to get a new pump.

Before changing the fuel pump I would recomend checking the rubber fuel lines that connect from the steel line to the filter and from the filter to the fuel pump. Also sometimes people will run a rubber line up from the pump instead of the factory one.Remove them and bend them looking for cracks if you see any cracking or they are getting hard and brittle replace them. Also check for loose clamps or leaking around the clamps where they could have bitten into the rubber line.

I absolutely agree with Amy. The two 5/26" fuel hoses which attach the fuel filter and the one fuel return hose exiting the side of the fuel filter all became "weepy" (as opposed to leaky) on my '79 Cordoba. So as not to take a chance on my engine catching fire, I replaced them all - and the fuel pump for good measure. It was not very expensive and it was easy to do.

Like' the bad seed' says, there is a vent hole in the fuel pump that in case the diaphragm leaks, the gas will leak out of the vent hole to the outside of the engine instead of going into the crank case. It's not unusual for it to vent gas then stop for a while. You need to replace the pump before it gets worse, which it will eventually.
