I've never read a horror book or seen a horror movie, how scary is it? Will I have sleepless nights? What good King books are not that scary? Of scaredness, 1-10 do you think?

King's books always read better than the movies. However, I think that the movie was pretty good. But, by today's standards, the clothes, dialog, hair, etc. will make it campy.

It was scarier when it came out because it was more realistic. Today, it would probably be a 5. When it came out, I thought it was an 8. I can not tell you if you will have scary dreams, because it will depend on how "jaded" you are to horror and suspense.

If you are going to read King, Salem's Lot is a good book to start out with. Most of his works are subtle attacks on the institution of religion (Christianity in particular). For the most part, it takes me almost half a novel to get interested in anything King writes. The exceptions are "Carrie" and "Salem's Lot". But, I read "Salem's Lot" when I was working the night shift in the oil field and got the willies.

I'd give "Salem's Lot" about an 8 on the scariness scale-- the vampires are fairly relentless. It also has a couple raunchy scenes. On the other hand, King's "Eyes of the Dragon" is about a 5 in scariness, a 9 in drama (very suspenseful!), and only has one sorta-raunchy scene. "Cycle of the Werewolf" is about a 6 or 7, illustrated, and a quick read (only 12 or 13 chapters).

You might also try a few of his short story collections. "Skeleton Crew" has older stories, while "Everything's Eventual" is more recent. Any given short story could range from 1 to 10, though.

I think that it is ok for a 13 year old to read. I hated reading when I was your age, my mom's friend gave Salem's Lot to read and I got hooked on reading. It can give you the willies, but remember it is fiction. It does not have any kind of new inventions like cell phones or computers, remember this book was written in 1975 (32 years ago!!!) So it might seem a little stupid. But on a 1 to 10 rates an 8 for me....
Give it a try if you don't like it there are other books to read...

The only books of Stephen King I know that are not scary are Shawshank redemption and Stand by Me.

If you get scared easily, then most stephen king books are probably too scary for you. Some kids like horror (they always have some crazy aunt that lets them watch Halloween or something). Not sure which camp you fall into.

i'm between the outliers who does no longer purely like the Stand or 'Salem's Lot (or greater desirable precisely, wasn't blown away; they're ok). I wasn't enthralled via way of Desperation (i do no longer like it on an identical time as King gets into faith) or the Regulators. as quickly as you learn "The Mist," did you learn in basic terms that tale or all of Skeleton group. in case you probable did no longer learn all of Skeleton group, you are going to be able to prefer to. There are some extremely solid short ideas there: The Jaunt, The Raft, The Monkey, Mrs Todd's Shortcut, Nona, Gramma. The Shining is terrifying, has great characters, and has adequate foreshadowing and symbolism to delight an English instructor. it extremely is the sole King novel to grant me nightmares. it extremely is truthfully long (over 1000 pages), regardless of the reality that it extremely is precise properly worth it. The characters are so great i certainly surpassed over them on an identical time as i ended the radical. i'm no longer exaggerating. The Eyes of the Dragon is extremely thrilling and thrilling to income. this is not any longer frightening and the characters are no longer as great as diverse King works, regardless of the reality that it has an exceptionally solid tale. The narration makes it look such as you're listening to some previous bard at an identical time as sitting beside a hearth. Bag of Bones is a sprint distinctive as that's written indoors the 1st-individual (in assessment to assorted the numerous King works i've got have been given learn), regardless of the reality that it extremely is creepy, has a solid secret, has solid characters, and has a extensive emotional factor. there is likewise some thrilling seems into the international of writing. i found domestic dog Sematary greater desirable irritating than some thing. I enjoyed the Colorado teen, yet many do no longer. do no longer assume a neat, reachable ending. Firestarter replaced into my first King novel. it extremely is extremely thrilling.

I despise horror films/books but my Daughter, now 14, started reading all the "Fear Street" books when she was 12. It disturbes me that she likes horror but then again so did my Mom. She would turn off all the lights to watch a scary movie...I'd leave the room!! Fact is, as long as she is reading!!

for me Salem's lot was about a 6 when I first saw the movie at about 11 or 12. However the original film is kind of tame by today's standards.
