why do people call wasps "jaspers" where did it come from i really cant work it out

Although it is rather tenuous, just searched Wikipedia and the jasper stone has a resemblance to a wasp.

im not sure to be honest ..but i went into a shop today and enquired how much their wasps were ..they said we dont sell wasps .. i said ..but youve got some in the window!
