EDIT AS YOU GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is one of my tips for you. I waited till I was finished writing to edit. BIG MISTAKE!!!!! You don't have to have at least 3 main characters, most of mine have 2. One of my had 1. Make sure that it's easy to follow. Have a good beginning, if the beginning is boring then it's really hard to get into and then the people just put it don't and don't read it. Hope I helped some.

Have at least 3 characters with one that is the strongest. Write a story about something you know about. I have been thinking about writing some children's stories, but the publishing process kind of scared me off so now I just write for myself and my kids. I have some great ideas though if you want them.

you need to actually think of what you want to do, think about it from beginning to end in your head, then write it down.
make your first chapter short, and not really explain anything but still tell what the story is about
don't write chapters that go on forever, but make sure to keep detail.
Have a couple of twists
have a couple of twists and a open ending

English lit 101 textbooks tell you how to write a good story (round out your characters, develop their personalities if time permits, keep stock characters to a minimum, avoid the deus ex machina, don't TELL your readers they should be sympathetic to the protagonist, SHOW them).
Do your homework.

Just write what you love.
Experiment as much as you want.
And take breaks often.
It can't any simpler than that. :0)
