first of all, youre not specific enough...
you have to specify the part where you want to make it faster...

*it could be your start up performance
*it could be your data processing performance or
*your gaming performane...

well if you say all of the above, i say you buy a high end computer!

these hardware components makes a computer faster:
*CPU (processor) e.g. amd athlon 3200+
*RAM (memory)
*Videocard - graphic or video performance
*Hard disk (SATA is faster compare to IDE) - data transfer

you also have to consider these points:
*a hot system is a slow system - you also have to consider the cooling system of your pc...e.g. when the processor gets really hot, it slows down your system or may crash the whole system..

*virus scanner - you also have to check your system regularly for virus and malware threats...viruses and malware can also cause your pc to slowdown or maybe crash...
- choose a good virus scanner because some virus scanners slows down your pc when they scan in the background...

One thing that speeds up any computer is to add more memory. This is probably the cheapest and easiest way to improve your computer The slowest thing in the computer will be the hard disk drive so upgrading to a faster disk will help - a little. It may help more to defragment the disk. On Windows there's a utility under Accessories/System Tools that will do that, it's time consuming but free and helps a little. Generally to upgrade to a faster CPU requires an upgraded motherboard, this is neither inexpensive, nor easy.

1) you could clean out your computer as there could be unwanted software running that could be slowing down your computer.

2) you could reformat as this would solve the problem mentioned in #1 also.

3) upgrade your cpu.

4) overclock your cpu but that would be done at your own risk as you could fry something.
