If it not your 3 year old, a toy that makes plenty of noise such as a cheap harmonica, slide whistle, drum, plastic recorder, or any loud electronic devise that does not have any volume control.

Something that makes a lot of noise like a kids keyboard.

There are also some books out at the moment by Leapfrog, that make noises and are really educational but really fun too! You should google it.

Something with lights will stimulate and 3 year old too.

If not just try a good old cardboard box!

Is it your child? A good mutual fund like an UTMA or ESA that you can add a little bit of money over a long period of time and wa-la you have a college fund / first car / first house / whatever.
If for someone else's child -
playdough
barbies
baby dolls with accesories (high chair, stroller)
action figures
finger paint
toy musical instruments
puppets

boy-- turcks, transformers and TMNT are big with them also thomas the train.

girl-- dolls, dora the explorer, barbie

i would suggest anything for outside or something to draw with. does the kid have a video game system? my 2 yr old has the baby leapster and she loves it. my neighbor has a 3 yr old boy and he loves john deere and thomas the train. hope that helps if not feel free to email me i could come up with some more ideas.

A stuffed animal (teddy bear or other animal)-- some kids carry their stuffed animal everywhere
coloring books and crayons

Of course, be sure that the items are safe for a 3 y.o.
