I have seen a penalty called on plays when the kickoff goes out of bounds. Sometimes no penalty is called. What is the rule surrounding when it is and when it isn't a penalty.

If a kick-off is touched by a member of the return team and THEN goes out of bounds, the ball is spotted where it went out. If it is not touched it is a penalty.

On a punt, the ball can go out of bounds without being touched with out a penalty.

If the ball goes out of the endzone, either through the back or off to the side, it is a touchback and not a penalty.

If the ball goes out of bounds on a kickoff it should always be a penalty. If it goes out on a punt however there is no penalty. If it went out on a kickoff without a penalty then the refs missed a call.

If a kick goes out of bounds beyond the end zone it is considered a touchback and the receiving team will take over on the 20 yard line. However if the ball travels out of bounds prior to reaching the end zone it is a penaly and the receiving team will then start at the 40 yard line.

On a kick off it is always a penalty and the ball is spotted at the 40 (maybe 35)... On a punt however there is no penalty.

when it goes out of bounds through the endzone its a touchback. but when it goes out of bounds from goal line to goal line, from 0 yard line to 0 yard line thats a penalty. then the ball would be placed on the 30 or 40 yard line.

on a kick off and the ball goes outta bounds the ball is placed on the 40..and is always a penalty...i think you may be looking at a punt when the ball goes outta bounds it doesn't matter...

Hey veggiefootbalqueen, you dumbass, there is no penalty on a punt if it goes out of bounds. For someone who posts on here a lot, you really don't know jasksh!t about football. And why did you change your name again, did YA kick you off again?

If the team recieving doesn't touch the ball and it goes out of bounds then it is a penaly. However if they touch it and then it goes out or if it goes out of the endzone then there is no penalty.

unless the ball goes out of bounds through the endzone it is automatically illegal procedure the ball is taken out to the 40 I believe. It used to be the 35
