OK so currently I live and work in Manhattan, NYC...but yesterday I went to view an apartment in a three family hourse about a mile or so from downtown Newark. I was impressed, 2 bedrooms, an included attic, bay windows, etc. floors varnished to a mirror like finish. GREAT PRICE!

Yet, when I shared with my friends about it, they all looked at me like I was crazy. "Didn't you hear about the crime rate over there? and about the old mayor who got into trouble for stealing funds, and the college kids who got killed, etc"

However, where I was didn't seem rough at all. It was next to the city hall, financial centers etc.

Should I listen to my friends (and the stats from an online crime stats website) and look elsewhere?

Or should I listen to my pocketbook and take the apartment?

There is alot of effort to improve Newark, NJ. With the PAC and Prudential Center and the light rail.
I've seen alot of improvements over the past 2-3 years myself.

The one thing I would concern yourself with is where your vehicle will be parked at night. Is there a secure location for it - such as a gated parking lot or enclosed and lockable garage.

If your vehicle will be secure at night and you like the place then I'd tell you to go with the apartment - - if the trend continues Newark will become a more and more desirable place to live.

Haha ....yeah I think I would have reacted like your friends. Certain parts of Newark are decent....but I still don't ever think I would live in that town. Crime rates are high, you have to worry about your car, you probably won't to be out late at night if your by yourself. After the college kids got shot ...that would probably make me even less likely to live there.

It's definitely a lot cheaper than most areas in northern NJ...but the reason is because no one really wants to live there. I would look in other areas of NJ...there are some great towns with public transportation that you don't have to worry about your safety every day. I wouldn't even want to stay in a Newark hotel for one night.
