I've tried Inventhelp (the one with the cave man carving a wheel) and Davison on past ideas. But they charge a lot for a bunch of extra crap that I don't want. I just want a basic patent search, and a PHYSICAL PROTOTYPE that actually works. I know it's a tall order, but how do I know I can trust some individual or company? How do ideas get developed?

I run a small engineering company (PES Ltd). We specialise in low-cost prototypes. Est 2000. See www.workingmodel.co.uk

Basically 3 things to do:

1. Find out if its new (product/patent search...we do that)
2. Build/test a first prototype (our core activity -refs available)
3. Apply for a patent (we have links with a chartered patent attorney)

Dont apply for a patent until you have tested it, that way anything you discover/develop can be included in the patent.

The main thing tho' is: how are you going to make money from it?

First step is to establish confidentiality, then we do a free technical appraisal.

Please see the website and then email or call from there.

Cheers

I think you need to be careful with who you submit your idea to. The crap you're talking about really is necessary for the protection of your product. It does cost money but it's worth the piece of mind. Do a little more research and you will see going it alone is not the route you want to choose. If you're serious about your product, you will need to take a more cautious approach . Don't just ask anyone to make this. Your idea can be stolen in a heart beat. I've been there. This is probably not the answer you were looking for but I felt I needed to let you know that . Try submitting your invention to Davison Design again but this time pay for all the crap. You'll be glad you did so in the long run.

Do a search for "model maker", or check your local yellow pages.

You may also find an individual who's handy who can make something for you. Ask around and see if you can find a retired mechanic, welder, etc. Or if there's a good hobby shop in your area, ask if there's a guy that everyone goes to when they have odd problems with their model plane that nobody can solve.

One long shot - check the EAA website below, and see if there's an active chapter near you. These guys build their own airplanes. Some build from kits, some build from scratch. Some can make almost anything you ask from a few sticks and some iron filings. You might get lucky.

Good luck!

Patent the invention and then hire someone to build it.
