What about when you open the lid to put the brush in and air gets in?

The glue is kept liquid by it's mixture of glue and thinners. When you use the glue the Thinners evaporate and the glue turns to a solid which bonds the two items together. That is why there is a warning on most glue bottles to only use in a well ventilated area

The ions of the plastic bottle and the glue are the same. Only opposites attract and therefore, bond.
