I heard Jaysen Q Rand on the radio last night on coast to coast with George Noory. He predicts a planet X (a brown dwarf star the size of Saturn) will enter our solar system and cause a polar shift in 2012. What would be the ramifications of a polar shift no matter what the cause. Please only people with extensive knowledge of the matter respond. Thanks

Jaysen Rand's credentials: Musician and UFOlogist. He obtained his Moscow University doctorate by researching UFO's. This wording was later conveniently switched to 'energyinformative sciences'.

As a creative writer, it is Mr Rand's JOB to go out and promote his books. It doesn't matter all that much if he actually believes anything that he writes about- he is trying to make some money. Since there is an incredible amount of misunderstanding about the Mayan calendar, Mr Rand is going to try to make as much money before 2012 as possible. He is currently hoping to turn his entertainment ideas into TV pilots for a weekly series. In order to increase sales of his books, he has claimed to be a UFO abductee and has conversed with aliens aboard their ships. It is a technique that has been used by others with success in the past. A quick google shows 115,000 results of writers claiming self-abduction. Mr Rand also believes that after this catastrophe and half of Earth's population is dead, that aliens will bring their alien/human hybrids that they have been breeding back to Earth to live with the survivors. Articles on Mr Rand may be found on such sites as Sorcery.net, Returnofplanetx.com, and TheUSofEsoterica.com. I think you get the point.

Planet X: The existence of a planet Nibiru is based on ancient Sumerian mythology. Sumerians used the word Nibiru for the planet Jupiter. In 1976, historian Zecheria Sitchin wrote a book about the tablets called 'The Twelfth Planet" whereby beings called Anunnaki came to Earth from a planet in our solar system with an orbit of 3,600 years. It is comparable to Erik Von Daniken's theories about ancient astronauts. Almost all educated historians, anthropologists, and archeologists consider it's existence as a myth. There is no evidence of it. It's last pass in 1600 BC would have been a much bigger story in papyrus scrolls than the stories of Moses yet it does not receive mention. Today, people have nicknamed it Planet X or the Tenth Planet. Every time an anomolous body is spotted in space, fanatics shout out 'Nibiru !' and begin claims of a NASA coverup. Personal theories on the internet are based upon previous theories and so on until now when we have a complete biography of the Niberians and their life on Earth! Of course, no-one ever bothers to check out the validity of previous theories. That would require effort. So they are just assumed to be fact. If further interested, you can research the fictional story of the Anunnaki. Lies and disinformation from New-Agers, occultists, apocalypse fear mongers, end-of-the-world propagandists, psychics, channelers, and fiction writers. Not from scientists. Take a closer look at the validity of your sources when gathering information. Research the claims and warnings of Mark Hazelwoods that Nibiru would be here in late spring or early summer of 2003. After it didn't show, it was attached to 2012 disinformation. A study of the Mayan calendar will reveal that it in no way implies the end of the world or a killer asteroid or an alien invasion or the return of Jesus or the return of some planet x or a pole shift or any other such nonsense. These are lies made up by persons trying to cash in on a topic where the majority of people remain uneducated and ignorant about and so are easily conned and manipulated into believing things that are simply not true. The Mayans created long measuring systems one of these is called a baktun. 2012 represents the end of 13 baktuns which is the end of one cycle but the baktuns continue through 19. In fact, 19.19.19.17.19 equals October 12, 4772. The next day will be first use of the "Pictuns" position and will be written as: 1.0.0.0.0.0. Armegeddonists and psychics wouldn't get much attention if they started proclaiming October 12, 4772 as the end of the world with it's accompanying pole reversals and planet x's etc etc so they picked 2012 hoping to make some good cash in the next 5 years.

There is a difference between polar shift and geomagnetic reversal.

Pole shift: Shifting of the poles has occured in the past and will continue to occur into the future. The magnetic north pole (which is actually the magnetic south- but that's a different story) has not always been located in the Hudson Bay area. Ramifications would depend upon the degree of shift. In extreme cases, there could be major climate changes for most of the earth's surface, as areas that were formerly equatorial become temperate, and areas that were temperate become either more equatorial or more arctic. Studies indicate that such changes would be gradual occuring over a span of at least 5,000 years and most likely longer. Recent work by scientists and geologists Adam Maloof of Princeton University and Galen Halverson of Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France, indicates that Earth rebalanced itself around 800 million years ago. Maloof and Halverson found that the north pole shifted more than 50 degrees — about the current distance between Alaska and the equator — in less than 20 million years.

Geomagnetic reversals: Earth's magnetic field may maintain a single orientation anywhere from tens of millions of years or for only 50,000 years. The last reversal was the Brunhes-Matuyama reversal approximately 780,000 years ago. If we contend that planet x is responsible, then ask yourself why Earth's field was not reversed in 1600 BC. Some fanatical persons manipulate the figures to presume an impending reversal but such is not the actual case. Earth's field strength has been dropping in the last 150 years but it is still ABOVE the 2,000 year average. If the drop continues at present pace, a reversal may be anticipated between 3000 and 4000 AD. There is no reason to anticipate such a continued decline. An instantaneous measurement of it, or several measurements of it across the span of decades or centuries, is not sufficient to extrapolate an overall trend in the field strength. It has gone up and down in the past with no apparent rhyme or reason. Ramifications: As stated, pole reversals have happened in the past. There is no evidence of biological extinctions as a result. Items relying on electricity and electromagnetics (e.g. radio, satellite communications) may be vulnerable to technological disruptions but other than going without television and not seeing the Aurora Borealis for a while, life will go on.

Welllll.. a couple of things.

1. Magnetic Polar shifts happen every so often - we see evidence of this going back millions of years. It has nothing to do with planets wandering by.

2. A brown dwarf is usually 3 to 8 times the size of Jupiter, and can be much larger. They can't be *smaller* than Jupiter.

3. Unless it's moving at tremendous relative speed, a planet the size of Saturn *would* be detected by now, since 2012 is only 5 years out. Heck, we see comets a year or so before they get here, and they're many millions of times smaller.

Now... in answer to your question...

A polar shift has happened before. Today, we see the north magetic pole wandering up to 8 to 20 miles per day. During periods of the shift, the magnetic 'shield' which protects us against cosmic rays and solar radiation will disappear, and (depending on how long a shift takes), we would likely see increases in cancers of all types, but most notably skin cancers.

Animals would be affected - especially those who can detect the Earth's magetic field for navigation. Speaking of which, every compass on Earth will be useless during the shift, and will point the wrong way *after* the shift is complete.

A major shift in the spin axis would be cataclysmic - probably no life would survive it. A shift in the magnetic poles could cause some temporary disruptions of electrical power grids and communications. These happen every few million years at odd intervals.

Rand's Planet X story is a hoax, though. Ask yourself why you're hearing about this on late-night talk radio and not in any science news. A brown dwarf five years away from us would be too obvious to keep a secret.

I have considered the ramifications and concluded that the worst thing that will happen is my toothbrush might fall off the bathroom counter. Of course that might also be a result of my own clumsiness. There have been alignments with the Earth, Sun and various objects throughout time. None have caused the Earth's poles to reverse or resulted in the end of the world. If I had a copyright on all this 'End of the world in 2012' BS I'd be rich.

A shift of which pole? The magnetic pole, or the spin pole? How much of a shift?

The spin pole naturally moves in a quasi-circular motion over about 14 months, with a radius of about 10 meters. Plus, it slowly drifts, about 20 meters a year. This movement doesn't seem to have bother anybody much. It was not even known until the about 1880 or so.

I know of no brown star that close, and we would have seen a star like that long before no, I think the guy is way off. The date is suspicious since he seems to be trying to tie it in to the end of the Myan calender. Lots of people predict doom and gloom in 2012 because a stone age people died out hundreds of years ago. Personally I think their calender maker just got tired of carvng calenders that would be used for generations. Besides the knowledge of a stone or bronze age people can't compare with our knowledge.

As for brown stars, the exist, but they aren't like black holes they do generate radiation and can be detected easily. If not that then the gravitional effects would be felt by the planets, the asteriods and the comets. The yearly Persied Metoer shower would have been off by a few days or something similar would have happened and we haven't seen that. Asteriods are subject to subtle gravitional shifts so we can see an effect from a passing body pretty quickly.

Besides planet X (at one time called Zena) was what generated the Pluto; planet or not controversy. Planet X was larger, but not a real planet so Pluto was re-evaluated and demoted to a Dwarf Planet. So we have known about Planet X for quite a while.

According to Wikipedia:
"Brown dwarfs are sub-stellar objects with a mass below that necessary to maintain hydrogen-burning nuclear fusion reactions in their cores, as do stars on the main sequence, but which have fully convective surfaces and interiors, with no chemical differentiation by depth. Brown dwarfs occupy the mass range between that of large gas giant planets and the lowest mass stars; this upper limit is between 75[1] and 80 Jupiter masses (MJ). Currently there is some question as to what separates a brown dwarf from a giant planet at very low brown dwarf masses (~13 MJ ), and whether brown dwarfs are required to have experienced fusion at some point in their history. In any event, brown dwarfs heavier than 13 MJ do fuse deuterium and those above ~65 MJ also fuse lithium. The only planet known to orbit a brown dwarf star is 2M1207b."

A magnetic shift in the Earth can happen and has naturally happened several times. If it does though we will get plenty of warning as the magnetic field weakens before it shifts. If a magnetic field shift does happen then it will temporarily weaken the strong magnetic fields that protect the earth from solar radiation. However, it is something that mankind and a lot of animals can survive. But, the words “pole shift” are very "iffy" the theory also calls for a shift of the earth's axis and it is not a very well accepted theory.

According to Wikipeida: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_shift_theory
"Pole shift theories are also not to be confused with Geomagnetic reversal, the periodic reversal of the earth's magnetic field (effectively switching the north and south poles). Geomagnetic reversal has more acceptance in the scientific community than pole shift theories.

One early popular proponent of a pole shift theory was Hugh Auchincloss Brown, an electrical engineer who advanced a theory of catastrophic pole shift. Brown argued that accumulation of ice at the poles caused recurring tipping of the axis in cycles of approximately 7 millennia."

According to Wikipedia:
“A geomagnetic reversal is a change in thttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_reversalhe orientation of Earth's magnetic field such that the positions of magnetic north and magnetic south become interchanged. These events, which are believed to last a few hundred to a few thousand years, often involve an extended decline in field strength followed by a rapid recovery after the new orientation has been established.”

“The rate of reversals in the Earth's magnetic field has varied widely over time. 72 million years ago (Ma), the field reversed 5 times in a million years. In a 4-million-year period centered on 54 Ma, there were 10 reversals; at around 42 Ma, 17 reversals took place in the span of 3 million years. In a period of 3 million years centering on 24 Ma, 13 reversals occurred. No less than 51 reversals occurred in a 12-million-year period, centering on 15 million years ago. These eras of frequent reversals have been counterbalanced by a few long periods when no reversals took place, as described below.
Until recently, it has generally been assumed that the frequency of geomagnetic reversals is random. However, it was shown in 2006 that the known reversals conform to a Lévy distribution.”

“At present, the overall geomagnetic field is becoming weaker at a rate which would, if it continues, cause the dipole field to temporarily collapse by 3000–4000 AD. The South Atlantic Anomaly is believed by some to be a product of this. The present strong deterioration corresponds to a 10–15% decline over the last 150 years and has accelerated in the past several years; however, geomagnetic intensity has declined almost continuously from a maximum 35% above the modern value achieved approximately 2000 years ago. The rate of decrease and the current strength are within the normal range of variation, as shown by the record of past magnetic fields recorded in rocks.”

So we are going to get plenty of warning if there is going to be a shift in the earth’s magnetic field.

To sum it up you are hearing the ravings of a lunatic who doesn’t know what he is talking about and is using fear to try and build up an audience. A common and cheap tactic used by charlatans for centuries.
