I would like to think so; however I think that would be a deep personal explanation on the behalf of spirituality, what we left in life and how we measure ourselves against others, accomplishments, etc. If that makes any sense to you.
added: I think everyone else missed the point of your gnostic question, not to be rude or anything but I don't think they understood your intention. Are you writing a thesis? I gave you a star because I love this question- it's a deep thought provoking study in alternatives.
Not morbid at all- everyone has their own way of dealing and coping so in the case of illness, questioning yourself is always a good place.

NO
Because death does not exist at the first person perspective. I believe death leads immediately to another life, as something or someone else, somewhere else in time etc.
You could very well be an anti-matter worm in an anti-galaxy somewhere in a remote time and in that case how can you remember you "were" a human since you now only got 3 antimatter neurons ?
And even if there is NOTHING after death, well you are no longer there to mourn yourself.
So NO, death is the absolue knock-out, you won't feel nor know a thing.

I have always been raised that we go to heaven and our souls are around us and blah blah blah.... well my grandfather died.. his life ended. There was no feeling of him in the house nothing. I was disapointed. I wanted to feel him near one more time. You stay behind and are remembered by those lives you have touched.

You won't even know you are dead. Dead people don't possess conscious thought.
