His sculpture was his image of David, as described in the Old Testament of the Bible (future king of Israel and ancestor of Jesus Christ). He wanted to portray a person who was strong-willed, and ready-to-fight, in order to inspire the City-State of Firenze (Florence, Italy).

Michelangelo's sculpture is of the young David from the biblical story of David and Goliath. He has portrayed David from before the battle with Goliath, with his slingshot over his shoulder. This was unusual for the time, as most sculptors who chose this subject portrayed David after the battle, with Goliath's head in his hand.

Michelangelo chose this subject as the statue was for his home city of Florence, at a time when the cities were actually more like states. At the time, Florence was surrounded by city-states much more powerful, so Michelangelo chose David as his subject to represent the victory David won over a much larger, stronger opponent, using his brains rather than muscle.

This information came from http://vlsi.colorado.edu/~rbloem/david.html and it also has links to various interpretations of the statue

It's King David from the Bible, who kills Goliath with a slingshot. That's why he's holding a slingshot over his shoulder in the statue.

Because it's of King David from the Bible. That's why he has the sling and it's why he's circumcized.

Google "michelangelo's david" or go to wiki.

Maybe he had 'future vision', anticipating Dickens' "David Copperfield"
