I have always gone to a male GYN. He is one of the most wonderful, compassionate people I have ever met. I've had the same GYN for over 20 years now and would not change of switching. On the flip side, my sister's GYN is female and she says the same thing about hers.
The only way you can determine this is to go to your appointment. If you do not feel comfortable, change doctors. It is YOUR choice. My determination always comes from how much time I can spend with my physician as to make my office visit informative. If I can ask questions, and get good answers I will remain with them. If I am rushed and treated like I am in an assembly line, I don't return.

For me, I've had better experiences with female gynos. My first time going, I had a female doctor. I felt very awkward and had no idea to expect. My second time going the first doctor was not available so I had a male doctor. It was very uncomfortable to me. I felt like he wasn't as personable and also most male doctors have to have a female nurse in the room for liability issues. So, I had TWO people in the room which made it all the more awkward.
It really depends on your own personal preferences and also the doctor. If you don't feel comfortable with this doctor then try a new one later on until you can find one you like.
Good luck!

This definitely depends on the doctor. I have only been to a female gyno, because it's awkward enough.
I would find a female gyno in a female-doctor only office or where she's practicing by herself. It'd be a natural reaction for a woman in a man's office to become a little rougher around the edges in office politics and unfortunately that might transfer to her patient care.
Above all, you should definitely go and for the first time you have to grin and bear it. It's uncomfortable when it happens, but it's important and over quickly. If you're very uncomfortable just talking with the doctor before the exam (not just because it's awkward), feel free to walk out and ask the nurse for another recommendation. You're not under any obligation to give that doctor your business. And I don't think a nurse wouldn't give you another referral - after all, I really doubt that they have their own exams with a rude and abrasive doc.
Good luck!

From my personal experience only:
On 1994 when I was 28 my daughter was born and my Gyno was one of most unqualified doctor to deliver the baby, the nurse (25y of experience) drive the delivery because the baby was in danger to die – my gyno could not take a quick decision.
On delivery because of the “hard push” (I did not want them to use the forceps on my baby) she cut the place, sewing back (seems like something is wrong on that place also, hemorrhoids (sine that time) urinary incontinence came latter, about 2 or 3 years ago.
In my opinion was a disaster.
My family doctor is a good one, in a sense that she hardly” lay a hand on you”, but that comes with the fact that she did not realize I have uterine fibroids or ovarian cyst, and in all I read on the internet, a simple pelvic-palm examination should be enough to discover (If it’s true).
TRUE I had the most comfortable and gentle PAP test though (I guess you can not have all good in one).
I would go to a good gyno, I am myself in searching for a good specialist, and I would like to see some recommendations from patients before going to a specialist.

There are only male gyno's here and trust me they can be pretty rough cause they don't have the parts that we do so they can't really understand the discomfort or even the pain sometimes...I wish to have a female gyno I think it would be just alittle more comfortable..Good Luck

I had a female doctor that was pretty rough and when I was asking about my period pains becoming worse she basically said to just deal with it because all women go through it.
I had a male doctor that was willing to listen and seem to be more gentle when giving the exam.
I had another female doctor that was pretty decent and was willing to discuss any problems I was having.
It all depends on the doctor and if you don't like the first one you see then you can always switch up. Trying asking your friends who they recommend.

I have always heard the same thing. I have always dealt with female docters. Well last year I had an emergency and my normal doctor wasnt avail and had to deal with a guy. I have to say that I did notice a difference. I guess he was scared of hurting me or something. I don't think I would want to see a guy doc again if I didnt need to bcuz it was quite embarressing.

the exam will go much more smoothly if you are relaxed, although thats easier said than done, especially for the first time. the only part in which you might have some slight discomfort is when the doctor inserts a tool called a speculum, which allows her to look at your internal reproductive organs. however, she'll match your body size to the correct size instrument. i've heard they can be a tad bit cold sometimes though. good luck !

It depends on the dr. i had some women be rough with me. then i had all male doctors that were gentle. they dont got what we have and i think thats why they are gentle. some females can be gentle. it depends on the person. My first one was kinda a bad experience i chose a woman doctore. she was mean to me. she was like you had penis up there why is it hurting you now. if i was smart i should of report her. but whatever.
