Is it an auto transmission?
Anyhow, that's transmission fluid. If it's coming from farther back, it's definitely coming from the transmission (bad). If it's from farther forward, it MIGHT be from the power steering (not quite as bad).
Is your steering feeling kind of sluggish? If so, try topping off the power steering fluid (which in many cars IS transmission fluid, but confirm this first) with Valvoline ATF with seal conditioner. It worked like a charm on my 84 corolla when it had a power steering leak. I wouldn't count on that working for the transmission, though.
If it doesn't work, this could get expensive.

Sounds like trans or transfer case fluid if you have a 4WD. Most standard trans. use automatic fluid and even some of the transfer cases have been known to use it as well. If it's dripping off of the unit it should be easy to see where it's coming from.

sounds like automatic transmission fluid. take it in for a fluid change and have them inspect the transmission for leaks before they change the fluid.
