1 cm = 10^(-2) m, so that 1 cm^2 = 10^(-4) m^2 = 0.0001 m^2.

Therefore 5 cm^2 = 0.0005 m^2.

That's 0.0005 square meters.

5 x 10^0 = 5
5 x 10^-1 = 0.5
5 x 10^-2 = 0.05
5 x 10^-3 = 0.005
5 x 10^-4 = 0.0005

5cm^2 = 5(cm)(cm)

5(cm)(1m/100cm)(cm)(1m/100cm) = 0.0005(cm)(cm)

= 0.0005cm^2 = 5x10^-4cm^2
