I have heard that they are good, but what is your experience? I'm thinking about getting some stuff at thrift stores if they are in good condition and cheaper than regular stores.

The selection at thrift stores vary w/ the neighborhood. Timing is another key.

I have friends who live in San Francisco. They regularly comb through thrift shops near upscale neighborhoods & find fabulous clothes and cooking items. Some things they have found: a pair of brand new Cole Haan shoes, London Fog girl's coat, copper kettles made in England.

I've found a couple of cool things by chance too.

Figure out which stores get the good stuff. Get to know the staff & when new merchandise arrives (i.e. donation drop offs, peak seasons, etc.). Patience & persistence pay off.

Depends on what you're looking for...electronics, most clothes, and linens are probably not good things to look for in thrift stores (bad appliances, wrong fits, icky and old, etc). But jewelry, random knick-knacks, dishes, furniture, and books are awesome things to look for in thrift shops...as well as old records. :)

I find more clothes that I like at a thrift store than I do at say WalMart, KMart ,etc...

Most of the time, they're pretty decent, you just have to look.
