I give chocolate. Not lollipops, or gum, or those little "mulitbag" kinds of candy: I get the GOOD stuff: CHOCOLATE BARS. Minis are okay, but there has to be a good selection, and you have to give each kid two or three.

When we used to live in a neighborhood we would get anywhere from 3-50 kids depending on the weather. I usually get a mixed back of fun size candy bars and mixed bag of Wonka Candy. Depending on how busy of a night that we have depends on how many I give out. If gets close to the end of trick or treating and we still have a lot left I give out handfuls.
Last year we took my daughter trick or treating for the first time. We lived in a Condo and I put out a bowl of candy in front of the door before we left. We walked across the street to the neighborhood of houses that were behind the same gate as us. A lot of older people lived there and they spoiled trick or treaters with full size candy bars, and even has some symphony bars and such for the adults. We were shocked at the amount of candy our 18 month old collected from half an hour of trick or treating. This year we will probably stick to mall, and bookstore trick or treats as we live out in the woods now instead of a neighborhood.

I have a wide assortment of stuff I give out. I get the mini pumpkin pails, vintage-type Halloween bags and cello bags, coffin boxes, etc. I fill these things up with about 5 candies more or less (chocolate bars, smarties, lolli-pops, Halloween themed candy, like monster coins, etc.). I also include Halloween toys or favors, like stickers, spiders, skeletons, etc. Then I make Halloween fortunes with a spooky fortune, Halloween jokes, and spooky famous quotes. I print them out on orange, green, or purple paper, make them into scrolls and tie them up with a different color ribbon. I set it all in some colored tinsel. I have a bunch of creepy candy bowls set up. For example, one with a flickering skull in the middle, one covered with cobwebs (I use skeleton tongs to grab the goodies out - greatly adds to the effect).

My street is dark and most of my neighbors turn off their lights and avoid the holiday. You'd think no one would bother, except I put up a lot of PG-rated decorations: a big twinkling jack-o-lantern Halloween tree, a haunted dollhouse being attacked by a giant spider, Halloween projections onto the house, and this year I plan to add something new, perhaps a creepy dead forest with lots of owls and nocturnal beasts. The point is that because of all of this, I always get over a hundred trick-or-treaters. Last year was the most, almost 150 (we took a tally so we'd be prepared for this year).

It varies from year to year. We get about 100 or so on good evenings with warm weather, on cold rainy nights quite a bit fewer.

Whatever we give out, it will be wrapped. Either mini candy bars, small tootsie rolls, or some other chewy chocolate treat. When I was a kid, I hated the hard candy, still do.

The neighborhood kids that I know, I will give more and the kids that come by later at night that are being dropped off in vans, I only give one piece to each.

Happy Halloween.

Minature candy bars.

Not many, less than 20 or 30 and I live in a good sized suburb.

I think the problem is that my street does not have sidewalks, and I am surrounded by people who shut off their lights and leave on Halloween. And before anyone tells me about them, "not being able to afford" it. HA! They are union retirees who pay nothing for health care, have their pensions and social security and can afford to drive brand new cars every two years and go on month long vacations to Europe. Cheap they may be, poor they are not.

And their bratty little grandkids come by my house so it isn't that they don't believe in Halloween either.

something different every year.
last year it was cans of pop and chocolates.
usually I give out treat bags with a different variety of candies in it. this year I'm going to do up goody bags with a Halloween pencil, Halloween eraser, Halloween stickers, plastic Halloween drinking glass, a small toy and just a few candy(probably fruit snacks)
we only get 30-40 kids but last year we had almost 70.

I only get about 50 kids a year because my house is in a neighborhood that's older and the houses are spread out. So I go all out! I make up little treat bags with stickers, spider rings, candy bars, gum, suckers, and anything else I can think of. One of my neighbors gives out full-sized candy bars and even hands one to mom or dad, if they are escorting the kids. We love trick-or-treaters around here!

I buy stuff I like and save some for myself ;-) Skittles, Junior Mints, Dots, Tootsie pops, Mini's, Smarties, etc... for the little ones who won't get to each much candy, I have snack bags of Teddy Grahams and little inexpensive toys.

We get hundreds of kids. I live in a nice, safe neighborhood so people bring their kids from other neighborhoods to trick or treat here. I don't mind, but we usually run out of candy by 7:30 or 8pm and have to close up shop. That's my kids' bedtime anyway (ages 1 and 3).

I give name brand candy bars. When I was a kid we'd always dump our sacks out and divide into groups of:
Candy Bars
Popcorn Balls

Other (apples, peanut butter kisses, suckers, etc...)

Most of the "other" ended up going home with Grandpa.
