The answer is really a bitter truth. In Asian society, in general, not all, males are more important than females. Mainly because of the duties that men had were more "survivalist" than the roles of the female.
This is something true in many societies, but in context of your question, that's the answer. Even in China, North Korea, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Malaysia, and the Phillipines, it is legally evident. If a woman is accused of adultry, prostitution, stealing, murder, preg-out-of-wedlock, the sentence is death. For men, its usually some form of mutilation-to-monetary fine imposed, or perfectly legal to those things.
This is so much entreched that even the moms prefer their sons over their daughers reguardless of age and condition. The biggest problem the Red Cross and various other disaster relief agencies had was that both local volunteers and victims were handling more baby boys, boys, men, and old men who were in less need or too far gone, rather than women in general. A reporter even observed a worker being pushed away from a baby girl who needed nothing more than a shot and dry clothes, to a 15 year old boy who'd been dead for an hour.
Even after death, which to me this was the hardest to imagine, let alone endure. Family members were sorting through bodies finding their sons, husbands, fathers, etc; before even searching the refugee camps for their daughters, sisters, and so on. Not just men doing this, but the women too...

Of course the men in the middle of the sea survived. So did countless tourists who were also on the ocean on boats. Some of them even rescued people who been pulled out to sea when the tsunami receded i onto their boats to save them. To the people on the boats, the tsunami was little more than a mild bumpy wave. What gives a tsunami its strength to go from a ripple to a huge surge is when it comes up close to the continent and the land goes up at an angle.
Heres an animation that explains it :

So yes, by the time the tsunami occured, the men were all mostly at work already. Children survived because someone fleeing the wave was more likely to pick up a small light child and run with them, knowing they would not slow them down, rather than a full grown adult. Some mothers even handed people passing by one of their children because they could not run with all of them - they would have all been slowed and drowned. Hope this helps to explain a little more of the tragedy.

Yes, that sounds reasonable. If you are in a boat, especially way out at sea, and not close to shore, you MIGHT NOT even notice the tsunami. The water will swell under you, and that is it. The tsunami doesn't become destructive, wave peak, become visible, etc. until it reaches the shallow water close to shore.

Tsunamis are easier to survive in the middle of the ocean because the ocean depth is greater there and the waves, although large, are smaller than when they break on the coast, where the depth is smaller.

Yes, a Tsunami wave out away from shore is barely noticeable, and all of its energy is below the water. It is not until it hits the shallow water of a shoreline that it grows in height and becomes dangerous

I don't know how right you are in your statistics here.
But you should know that no animal has died in the tsunami who were free from their posts. Only those animals who were tied and couldn't escape from their posts died.
Similarly, women who were tied to their posts, i.e. tied to their daily cores and were not well informed of the dangers of the Tsunami were dead. Men who were free animals and had better assess to the news were able to save their lives.
It is quite another thing that animals had their own senses to realize the oncoming dangers of such storms and fled to higher grounds to save themselves.
