With more immigrants coming into the East Coast,especially New York,Atlanta, Boston, you had so many people in overcrowding conditions. Also the economy was pretty bad after the American Revolution. Also during the 1840's and also after the Civil War.

The east was no longer appealing. It was overcrowded and expensive. Settlers moved west because of cheap land and better opportunities.

escaping the authority of established religion. yeah. whether they were corrupt or not isn't the issue... whether or not it was a masonic agenda to induce spiritual unrest isn't the issue either. the issue is that the kid wants to leave it's parents, see the world, and get into trouble.
