I have done this several times with varying degrees of success. Here are some hints from when we did this...

- Have a large house with lots of places for people to go. It is much harder in a small house and with everyone in the same room. If you take my advice below and give characters lots of things to do, having secret places to meet it important.

- Give everyone 'tasks'. The more tasks the better. Try to have some of them relate to the crime. Some examples include...
- Make contact with another character (exchange information, have a 'love affair', threaten each other, etc)
- Have someone expose another character as a criminal/spy/adulturer. Either have them gossip this information, or make a loud pronouncement.
- Have a character loudly threaten another character
- They are searching for another character (perhaps they are CIA looking for an enemy spy)
- Have arrangement to buy/sell a weapon to another character
- Have someone steal something 'important'

- Props are vital. Get toy guns (I have an old BB gun that looks and feels real, it is perfect). Also, look around import or 'curio' type stores for interesting items (we found a letter opener that made a great 'sacrificial knife')

- We had the 'victom' not be a member of the group. The victom is the host and he never makes an appearance. Instead, characters playing 'police' give the details of the body/murder.

- Personally, I like the mid-20th century time frame. 30's, 40's, and 50's. The clothes are fun. The music is good (and easy to find). And, there was enough going on in the world that you can bring in spy themes, etc.

I think Wundt just said it all - it is great fun to do! If you make some characters of different nationalities, people can have fun trying to fake foreign accents too. How about a murder at the Academy Awards? That could be glamour or characters from a movie. All you need is a red carpet & a few props!

Food is an extra complication - what I do is easier - we play the game between taking breaks to serve the courses. Here are some links which might give you ideas. Have a great night!

Wow, what a great idea! That is so cute! I don't have any ideas right now, but I can get back to ya later. Are there going to be any children involved? If so it would be nice to have them participate, if not then you can pretty much do what you want. How fun! It also depends on what you like. Fairytale theme, medieval, vampires etc.
edit:
I keep thinking I should just go to another answers forum because people here can be so immature. Just look at some of these answers!

Perry Mason subject Ten Little Indians subject Ironside subject Matlock subject homicide She Wrote Sherlock Holmes subject something of those songs that has a sprint of poser in it. Have a great time including your secret party.

Yea, how about that guy that worked for the Clinton White House that was found dead----Vince something or another.

Just remembered---it was Vince Foster.

You can have people dress up like Bill and Hillary, some guy could dress up like Janet Reno
