I know I'm going to stir the pot with this question. I know it was wrong for Belichick to have a Patriots employee videotape the Jets defensive signals but don't all NFL teams review their game films anyway? Wouldn't they see signals while they are watching that? Does this mean the NFL will no longer allow the games to be filmed for reference matter? Also, why is it such a big deal, was the taping a live feed to the Patriots box where they could relay those signals to Belichick during the game?

DoH...THANK YOU!!! Finally someone who understands my own confusion! It doesn't make sense to say they were stealing signals because they won't know which signal went with which defensive play.

I believe the NFL films the games which are then shared with the other teams. Every team is looking at the same film. In this case someone working for the Patriots was specifically filming the multiple different Jet's coaches that were sending signals to the defensive players. The key is to figure which coach is sending the real information and then what the hand waving actually means.
Not unlike baseball where the coaches are sending signals to the players through elaborate hand waving, crotch grabbing and spitting.
I think this is much to do about nothing. Even if the Patriots were filming this, what good is it during this particular game (first game of the season)? Wouldn't you have to take the film back to Boston and evaluate the signal vs the real play to determine what the signal actually was? How could you figure that out real time during the game?
Bill Belichick is rumored to be the most paranoid coach in the NFL, Jet's coach Eric Mangini used to work for Bellichick. Don't you reckon that Mangini would have learned all the tricks of the trade from Bellichick, including how to hide your signals from the opposition? Maybe that is why Bellichick was so mad when Mangini left the Patriots - he knew to much?

Filming the entire game for film study purposes is different than focusing a camera on a coach with the intent of learning what play they would call before they hit the field. And films are studied after the game, both teams have access to them and can make adjustments the next time they play. And all you glean from them is the play itself, not the signal for what play is going to be called. These tapes were to be used to gain an unfair advantage during the game. Signal stealing isn't anything new, but this is a big deal because it looks like it was done in a way that violated league rules.

Belichick's employee was not taping the game itself for later review,he was taping specifically the coaches sending defense signals to the players, you can sugarcoat it anyway you want to,and there may be other teams that could also be doing it,but the bottom line is that's cheating, what is next on Belichicks spy tricks?placing a mole on the opposing locker room, paying an opposing team's coach for the signs,or how about hiring a high price hooker to get an opposing coach to divulge team signals

The Jets are just pulling stuff out of thin air they lost and lost big, on top of losing their quarterback to injury. Someone else on here already said something I was thinking other teams are going to see your signals they watch the tapes after the game anyway. What do you think happens in Baseball they look for the other team's signs during the same and try to figure them out if it wasn't a camera they could have someone on the sidelines just dedicated to figuring that stuff out. Besides i don't even believe it is true like I said at the beginning of this the jets are just pissed and Mangini is jealous he left the pats

They stole the other team's defensive signals so that they would know what was going on before the defense even hit the field. This way, they would know what plays to call and what plays to trash.

I always wondered how the Pats could ever win with their roster. Now I know. What kind of "men" would tolerate "winning" that way? No men at all. They should forfeit that game and hand back some Super Bowl trophies.

Its a bunch of BS that the Jets are trying to pull since they lost so big. Not covering randy moss is why they lost not because the Pats were video taping them.
