You need a hard-and-fast list and then you can trade one thing for another--buy some other bread if rye isn't on sale etc.

But for your own sanity, you have to know how much you have to spend and prioritize the list. This means never buying something just because it's on sale unless it's being substituted for something else. We're not talking willpower here, we're talking budget.

Even a millionaire would have to make priorities, deal with limits of what he needed for consumption, limits of space, limits of time, the need to shop or send someone to do it, etc.

I'm the same way with groceries! In my fridge is probably 10 yogurt cups that have gone bad and I just haven't thrown them out yet.
