Last weekend my kids were at their father's house, which is along the shore of a bog in the back. The kids (17, 13), their dad and stepmom were all outside doing yardwork and what not. They saw two teenagers go into the bog after a soccer ball. One of them panicked as they were getting out at the far end of the bog. There was nothing my kids or their dad and stepmom could have done in time, but they did call 911. How do I comfort them, even if they seem "fine"?

You don't force your comfort on them but you let them know that you are available if they need your comfort.

They are old enough now to have friends that they will find comfort from, as this is probably a story that they will share with them.

Kids are strong. If they need more help look for the warning signs and then approach them.

Their school counselor can be an invaluable source of information. Ask her/him what your options are. They deal with these instances all the time.

encourage them to talk to you about the experience.
Try not to verbalize or otherwise convey your feelings.

if they are not ready to discuss it, let it be.

If they are 'fine' let it be, do not dwell on what they saw.
