Yes, Martin Luther spent almost his whole life in Saxony, he was born there in a town called Eisleben, and started the Reformation in Wittenberg. The elector of Saxony, Friedrich The Wise, was protecting him against all enemies.
(If this should be interesting for you: the people who are called Saxons today, and already in the time of Luther, have nothing to do with the Saxons who were invading Britain a thousand years ago, together with the Angles. Those were coming from a region which is called Lower Saxony today, and that tribe did not leave the country either. Only the name "Saxony" was wandering to the southeast, where you find it now, for dynastic reasons.)
@ Ina
I´m sorry, Ina, but the territorial borders in Germany during the early Renaissance were looking very different from the Länder-borders of today. Martin Luther´s life would probably have been short, and bitter ending otherwise. Thuringia, and Saxony-Anhalt didn´t exist als political units, and even the Wartburg, from where you can look over to Hesse, was only safe because it was belonging to his protector in those days.
Just take a look at any of the sites about Friedrich The Wise, to become certain about his title, and the extension of his electorate. - Don´t mind!

Hi there,
OK. let's try to be precise.
Martin Luther was born in Eisleben, in a State called Sachsen-Anhalt, studied theology in Erfurt (Thuringia), worked in Wittenberg (Saxony-Anhalt) and translated the Bible into German on the Wartburg, Eisenach (Thuringia).
Saxony (Sachsen) is a state east of Thuringia in Germany and I do not know of any records that he has lived there.
Sorry, but Saxony is a well used name in German States, due to a tribe that used to live in those areas called Saxons.
So we actually have Saxony (Sachsen) with it's capital Dresden, Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt) with it's capital Magdeburg and Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) with it's capital Magdeburg

I agree 100% with otto.saxo, his anwer is the best one.
And Ina, the capital of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) is not Magdeburg but Hanover.
@drsalsacroata
you are right, in German the name will be written with two "n" "Hannover", but in English the name will be written with one "n", why? please do not ask me, It ist exactly the same with "Nürnberg" or Nuernberg (German) and Nuremberg (with "e" and "m" in English).
As in German you say "Teneriffa" (with "a") but the correct name in Spanish ist "Tenerife" (with just an "f" and "e" at the end) ;O)
