Most server tip-outs for bussers are mandated by the house as a certain % of reported tips.
Most bussers make good money. The work is not mentally taxing.

Well I worked in a restaurant for 3.5 years and technically I was kitchen help but what I did was everything that needed to be done.
I would help with sitting people, bringing out drinks and food (but never take orders) helping prepare food for the chefs (but wouldn't cook) make sure the tea was made and helped clean up tables and the bar area. On the floor of the restaurant where everyone sits you see bussers cleaning up the tables after the people leave as well as cleaning up messes that happen. Also after hours the bussers clean the restrooms but since I was never a true bus boy I never did that.

My bussers were also the dishwashers. Normally the servers did it and reset tables, but if they were overloaded they could call on the dishwashers. And they also took out the garbage and did random other jobs. Like folding napkins and helping set up for banquets. It's like a "gopher", it's not just picking up dishes. And pray that the servers tip you out at the end of the night even though you make more than they do.

Mainly Clear and reset a table for the next group of diners but bussers usually do just about anything from run garbage out to help move dishes around, get stuff for the bartender. But remember if you do these extra things for people they should tip you for doing there job for them

My son is a busser at Bob Evans. He clears the dishes and puts the place mats for the next customers. When it's busy, he has had to help load the dishwasher. One time they ran out of mayonnaise and he had to go to Kroger and buy some.

well, it depends on the resturant. i'm a "bus girl" and my responsibility is to clear plates when people are finished, clean off and wipe down tables when they're done, clean up any messes, get things like side salads and soups together while the waittresses take care of the other parts of the order, fill in for the hostess while they are busy.......... etc....... basically, you are a mix between a hostess and a waitress........ but u clean a lot lol

They clear the table from the previous customers and set up the table for the next. Generally they usually get tips from the waiters/waitresses that they clear the table for.

I agree with all the above answers. It also depends on how good a busser you are, of course. Most bussers get tipped out by the staff and if the waitstaff pays out of pocket (instead of a pot) then it is up to their discression. good bussers make a lot. Not so good bussers often don't get much.
