Yes there is. A birthing ball is made from tougher material than an exercise ball. As a result a birthing ball squishes down a lot less when you sit on it. The tougher material also means that if a birthing ball get a hole in it, it will deflate slowly rather than bursting.
I owned an exercise ball and was going to use it as a birthing ball. I then went to an active birth yoga class and used a birthing ball and found this much better. Because it doesn't squish as much when you sit on it. it is easier to maintain the optimial position for the fetus whereby the knees are lower than the hips. It also provides better support if you want to lean on it for a long period of time.

Not practically no - I don't think you can use a birthing ball for exercising, but you can certainly use an exercise ball as a birthing ball. They're apparently very good during labour... I have a giant silver Pilates ball which I will be taking with me when I go into labour!

Think they're the same - we were advised by our midwife to bring our exercise ball to the hospital if we had time as they only had a few and couldn't guarantee us getting one...they're just used for different things..they both come from the original idea, medicin ball which was made for sports people and people with injuries!

Same thing! Just make sure you have the right size for your height. Oh, and there are certain types of birthing balls that are a bit different. They are shaped more like a bullet. It is supposed to help you balance better... But most are the same.... And I highly recommend using one throughout pregnancy and labor!
